Research

The aim of Steven’s research is to make aviation cleaner and quieter. He is also interested in reducing pollution from other sectors of the economy. His research areas include:

  • Climate and air quality impacts of aviation
  • Aircraft emissions
  • Contrail avoidance
  • Biofuels for aviation and ground transportation
  • Electric aircraft design
  • Low emissions and noise aircraft propulsion technologies
  • Novel propulsion technologies for future aerospace vehicles
  • Impacts of aircraft noise
  • Air pollution impacts of ground transportation
  • Atmospheric modeling and sensing
  • Environmental policy assessment

Most of the research Steven Barrett is involved in is undertaken in the MIT Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment and/or as part of the MIT Electric Aircraft Initiative.
