The aim of Steven’s research is to make aviation cleaner and quieter. He is also interested in reducing pollution from other sectors of the economy. His research areas include:
- Climate and air quality impacts of aviation
- Aircraft emissions
- Contrail avoidance
- Biofuels for aviation and ground transportation
- Electric aircraft design
- Low emissions and noise aircraft propulsion technologies
- Novel propulsion technologies for future aerospace vehicles
- Impacts of aircraft noise
- Air pollution impacts of ground transportation
- Atmospheric modeling and sensing
- Environmental policy assessment
Most of the research Steven Barrett is involved in is undertaken in the MIT Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment and/or as part of the MIT Electric Aircraft Initiative.
